On June 23, Ambassador Kaspars Ozoliņš met with George J. Furey, the speaker of the upper house of the parliament - the Senate, during a familiarization visit. At the meeting, the parties exchanged opinions on issues of bilateral and multilateral cooperation, as well as on international current events.

The speaker of the Senate, Furey, emphasized the close bilateral ties between Latvia and Canada, which is confirmed by the regular political dialogue at the level of parliaments and governments. The speaker recalled his visit to Latvia almost five years ago, when the NATO expanded battle group under the leadership of Canada had just started operations. In Speaker Furey's assessment, it was a decision appropriate to the security situation at the time, but Canada will continue to be a reliable NATO ally on the eastern flank. The current agenda of international security, energy security and transition to green energy also significantly expands the possibilities of future bilateral cooperation.

Also, during the conversation, questions about Russia's aggression in Ukraine were discussed, specifically - about the need to maintain international support for Ukraine, its territorial integrity, as well as the need to long-term implement the broad-spectrum decisions made in international unity. In the course of the conversation, the parties touched on the issues of the global food crisis, the upcoming NATO summit and others.
