Dr. Vaira Vīķe-Freiberga receives the Order of Canada

On 3 October in Ottawa, Dr. Vaira Vīķe-Freiberga, former President of Latvia (1999-2007), was awarded the Order of Canada, honouring her contributions to the strengthening of Canada-Latvia relations.

The statement by Rideau Hall:  "Vaira Vike-Freiberga has enriched Canada-Latvia relations and reflected Canadian values abroad. Professor emerita in psychology at l’Université de Montréal, she returned to her native Latvia to become the first woman to serve as its president, helping the country enter into NATO and the European Union, and regain stability during its post-Soviet period. She remains committed to protecting democracy and human rights, and to promoting women leaders worldwide. This is an honorary appointment."

During the Investiture Ceremony at the Rideu Hall, the Right Honourable Mary Simon, Governor General of Canada, addressed the Order of Canada appointees: "The snowflake insignia that you are about to receive is a symbol of the uniqueness of your accomplishments – as no two snowflakes are alike. It also represents Canada’s unity in diversity".
