14 June commemorative event for the 1941 deportations from the Baltic States to be held in Ottawa

On 14 June, the Commemoration Day for the Victims of Communist Genocide, a solemn commemorative event for the 1941 deportations from the Baltic States will take place at the Memorial to the Victims of Communism – Canada, a Land of Refuge in Ottawa.

The event is organized by the Embassies of Latvia, Estonia and Lithuania and will start at 10 AM, preceded by the reading of names of Lithuanians deported to Siberia at 9 AM.

Unveiled in the fall of 2024, the Memorial is located downtown Ottawa, in the Garden of the Provinces and Territories,  at Wellington and Commissioner Streets.  The Memorial was built by the Governement of Canada and donations.  The Governement of Latvia, Latvians and diaspora organizations in Canada also contributed.

On 14 June 1941, more than 15 000 Latvian citizens deported to Siberia by the Soviet occupation regime.
