The Independence Day of Latvia celebrated across Canada
The 107th anniversary of the proclamation of the Republic of Latvia was widely celebrated across Canada in November.
On 3 November, Ambassador Kaspars Ozoliņš hosted a diplomatic reception at the Canadian War Museum in Ottawa. It was pleasure to welcome the Honourable David McGuinty, Minister of National Defence of Canada, as well as Members of Parliament, Senators and members of the Canadian Armed Forces, the diplomatic community and representatives of the Latvian diaspora at the event. The guests also had an opportunity to enjoy the screening of the Academy Award winner animation film “Flow".
Several events were organized by the Latvian diaspora communities. On 14 November Ambassador Kaspars Ozoliņš participated in the celebration of Latvia’s Independence Day with the Latvian community in Richmond, British Columbia. On 15 November Ambassador Ozoliņš attended a festive event and concert at the Canadian Latvian Centre in Toronto. On 16 November Ambassador participated in the celebration of the proclamation of the Republic of Latvia in Hamilton, Ontario. On 22 November Ambassador took part in the celebrations in Ottawa.
The festive events in honour of the proclamation of the Republic of Latvia were also organized in Montréal, Québec, and in Edmonton, Alberta.
In recognition of the Independence Day of Latvia, on 18 November the Latvian flag was raised in ceremonies at the Ottawa City Hall, in Toronto and Halifax, Nova Scotia. On 15-16 November the Latvian flag was flying at the City Hall in Hamilton.
On the evening of 18 November, the Niagara Falls were illuminated in the colours of the Latvian flag, courtesy of the Niagara Falls Illuminated Board.
