A working meeting with foreign ambassadors and Canadian officials held in Ottawa on Latvia’s priorities for the UN Security Council in 2026–2027
To inform about Latvia’s priorities for the work in the United Nations Security Council in 2026–2027 Ambassador of Latvia Kaspars Ozoliņš hosted a meeting on 9 December 2025 in Ottawa with officials from Global Affairs Canada and heads of diplomatic missions in Canada - Ambassadors of Colombia, Denmark, Greece, Pakistan and Chargé d’Affaires a.i. of Panama – countries that have been elected to the United Nations Security Council for the same term.
Ambassador Ozoliņš informed that Latvia would for the first time in history serve as an elected member of the UN Security Council. He highlighted Latvia’s commitment to actively participate in the work of the Council to uphold international law, the UN Charter, rules based international order, strengthen resilience of the multilateral system, support Ukraine’s sovereignty, support UN peacebuilding efforts and conflict prevention, address cybersecurity and hybrid threats.
Representatives of other countries shared their vision on the priorities of the work of the Council. Following the discussion, Ambassador Ozoliņš expressed confidence in excellent cooperation to promote respect for international law and rules based international order, as well as in cooperation to advance initiatives of joint interest.
