In accordance with point 1 of Article 24 of the Regulation (EC) No.810/2009 of the European Parliament and of the Council of July 13, 2009 establishing a Community Code on Visas (Visa Code), when a positive decision has been made on issuing a visa an additional “grace period” of 15 days shall be added to the validity period of the visa. However, this does not change the number of days that the person concerned can stay in Shengen territory.

For example, if a person applied for a visa from July 9, 2010 to July 21, 2010 and the visa is granted, it will be issued for the period of July 9 to August 5, 2010 with a leave to remain in Shengen territory for 13 days.

The applicant will have to provide travel medical insurance for the number of days of stay (excluding the 15 days of “grace period”) provided that the insurance policy does not mention fixed dates but rather the number of days of validity.

For example, in the abovementioned case, the person will have to provide travel medical insurance for the period of 13 days valid within the period of July 9 to August 5, 2010.
