Local audience introduced to Latvian history through the movie Baltic Tribes

On 28 May 2024 in Cairo, an open-air Latvian movie night took place gathering members of resident diplomatic corps, Egyptian partners and Latvian diaspora for the screening of “Baltic Tribes: Last Pagans of Europe” – a vivid documentary telling the story of peoples living in the area of what is now the sovereign states of Latvia, Lithuania, Poland and Estonia. Based on chronicles and other historical evidence, the movie was an opportunity to present less-known facts about history, culture and engagement of these peoples with the rest of the world. The informal setting coupled with a documentary set in 13th century provided great grounds for discussions as it was a crucial turning point in history not only for the peoples inhabiting Latvia at that time, but also for those in the Middle East due to Crusades taking place in both areas and new states being formed across Europe and its neighbourhood.

This event was co-hosted with Embassies of Lithuania, Estonia and Poland as part of Europe Month celebration and aims to promote the diverse cultural and historical heritage of European Union. It also strives to introduce local partners with the rich tapestry of Latvia’s history and to broaden their understanding of our values and identity.
