Open-air cinema gathers Latvian Diaspora in Cairo

On 23 April 2025 in Cairo, for a third year in a row, the Polish-Baltic movie mini-festival took place to showcase the diverse cultures of European states and different historical experiences they had. This year’s event, organized by the Embassy of Latvia, was devoted to the Latvian diaspora un the tradition of folk dance as an important way to preserve the Latvian identity abroad – beautifully showcased by the movie “More Than a Dance”, the most recent documentary by Pauls Dombrovskis.
The open-air cinema night gathered many Latvians both from Cairo and Hurgada, allowing to meet others, converse and talk to Embassy representatives in a festive setting of an upcoming 4 May. It was also attended by cooperation partners of the Embassy as well as many diplomats. The splendid scenes of the last Nationwide Song and Dance festival left many emotional.
In his remarks, Ambassador Andris Razāns highlighted the role that tradition of folk dance has had in preservation of national pride and hope during the Soviet occupation, crucial for eventual regaining of independence of Latvia. He expressed hope that the movie inspired the Latvian families present, especially the young generation.
Project was funded by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Latvia Programme for support of Diaspora.
