Latvian Language Joins the European Day of Languages in Egypt
On 24 September 2026, the Latvian language will be presented for the first time at the European Day of Languages in Egypt, held at the Goethe-Institut Cairo.
The participation will give students and members of the public an opportunity to become acquainted with Latvian and learn more about the language as part of Latvia’s cultural heritage.
The programme brings together language and cultural activities, including interactive stations, language games, music and short introductory language sessions. A morning programme is planned for secondary school students, followed by activities open to the general public during the afternoon.
Latvia’s participation is organised by the Embassy of Latvia in Egypt. Visitors will be able to learn about Latvian at a dedicated station and take part in Latvian “Lesson Zero” sessions. They are intended as a brief introduction, allowing participants to hear Latvian, learn basic words and expressions, and become familiar with some of its particular features.
Latvian is the official language of Latvia and belongs to the Indo-European language family. It is one of only two living Baltic languages and has a number of characteristics that make it distinctive. For example, stress in Latvian normally falls on the first syllable of a word. The language also uses a Latin-based alphabet with additional letters that represent sounds specific to Latvian.
The European Day of Languages in Egypt is organised by the Delegation of the European Union to Egypt, together with participating European countries and national cultural institutes.
