Conductor Mariss Jansons to conduct at Kennedy Center

On Sunday, February 3, 2008 at 3:00 p.m. Mariss Jansons will direct Amsterdam's Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra in a performance of Richard Strauss's Don Juan and Mahler's Symphony No. 5. The concert will take place at the Kennedy Center Concert Hall in Washington, DC and is presented by the Washington Performing Arts Society (WPAS).

Mariss Jansons became the Chief Conductor of the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra in September 2004. Born in Latvia and currently residing in St. Petersburg, Russia, Mr. Jansons was chief conductor of the Oslo Philharmonic Orchestra from 1979 to 2000, during which time he raised the orchestra’s standing to international level. He subsequently held the post of music director with the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra to equal success.

Mariss Jansons has been awarded various international honours for his achievements, including the Cross of Merit from King Harald of Norway and memberships of the Royal Academy of Music in London and the Gesellschaft der Musikfreunde in Vienna. In May 2006 he was awarded the Order of the Three Stars, Latvia’s highest state honour.
