An opening reception for University of Wisconsin Eau Claire (UWEC) photography students’ international photography exhibit "Cultural Perceptions" will begin at 5:00 p.m. October 7, 2010 in the Latvian Embassy in Washington DC. Five UWEC Art students and two faculty will present lectures with students and faculty from the Latvian Culture College that summarize their experiences in developing this international exchange and highlight each respective university art program. The event is free and open to the public and will be available for viewing through November 6, 2010 at 2304 Massachusetts Ave NW, Washington DC.

This exhibit is the result of a faculty-student research collaboration in a global setting. Students from UW-Eau Claire and Latvia worked together this past Spring to share and interpret visual culture between the two countries. “Cultural Perceptions” was exhibited in Riga, Latvia at the Latvian Culture College as well as UWEC’s department of Art & Design. We are now quite honored to have been invited to display our exhibit once again for the Latvian Embassy with a new responsibility of interpreting the exhibition that we developed as a group. Seniors Megan Ekenstedt and Lydia Gantert have assumed responsibility for leading the organization, art preparation, transportation and installation of the exhibit from Eau Claire to Washington. “It is certainly an honor for all of us to represent our school in Washington and for students to know that their hard work is valued. This kind of opportunity is important for our Art students. Direct involvement in this type of professional experience enhances student careers here, and well beyond graduation at UWEC. Making connections like these carries great value and ultimately open doors for future international ties.

The event is sponsored by the Latvian Embassy in Washington DC, UWEC’s College of Arts & Sciences, the State Culture Capital Foundation in Riga Latvia, UWEC’s faculty/student collaborative grant, faculty travel grant & student travel grants, the department of Multicultural Affairs, the Department of Art & Design, and the Foster Gallery in Eau Claire, Wisconsin. Advanced photography students participating in the project are senior Megan Ekenstedt, Chippewa Falls; senior Lydia Gantert, Wausau; junior Andrew Immerman, Eau Claire; senior Rachel Konsella, Eau Claire; junior Milana Lazic, Serbia; senior Kailey Mezera, Anoka, Minn.; senior Kimberly Roffers, Ashland; and senior Glenn Terpstra, Bloomington, Minn. Students participating from the Latvia Culture College in Riga, Latvia, are Aivars Ivbulis, Ieva Strale, Madara Eglite, Davis Valbaks, Sandra Arina, Sandra Kanepe, Janis Viksna and Rudolfs Rancans.
