Latvia’s Ambassador to the U.S. Elita Kuzma participates in the Global D-ISIS Ministerial
On September 30, 2024 Ambassador Elita Kuzma represented the Republic of Latvia in U.S. Secretary of State Anthony Blinken’s led Global D-ISIS Ministerial, marking 10 years since the formation of the Global D-ISIS Coalition and 5 years since the defeat of Daesh/ISIS in Iraq and Syria.
In 2014, in response to the Iraqi government’s request for assistance against Daesh/ISIS, under the leadership of the United States a Global Coalition was formed. Currently there are 87 member states commited to work together to insure the defeat of the current threat.
Global D-ISIS Coalition Ministers commit to supporting the Government of Iraq’s efforts to safeguard the security, peace, and development of the Iraqi people. The Global Coalition is committed to the goal of raising $394 million to assist areas liberated from Daesh/ISIS.
Member states will continue to work together until the complete defeat of Daesh/ISIS. Latvia has been a member of the Global D-ISIS Coalition since its inception. Currently, one service member of the Latvian National Armed Forces is participating in the Global D-ISIS Coalition military operation “Inherent Resolve”. In 2020 and 2021 Latvia has implemented support projects for women and children at risk of violence in northern Syria.
