Who are the Latvians?
Where did they come from, and how did they end up by the Baltic Sea?
What inspired them to establish a free country, what caused them to lose it, and how did they win it back?
The Latvian Saga by Uldis Germanis (published in November 2007 by Atena Publishers)
This new translation of Uldis Germanis' legendary The Latvian Saga is the first English-language history to tell the full story of the Latvian people in a way all can understand. It presents history, but reads like a novel. It describes the people, powers and events that made Latvia what it is today, and puts it all in a broader European context. Completed in 1958 (in Latvian), it inspired several generations of Latvians to dedicate their lives to the restoration of Latvia's independence in 1991. This special expanded edition of Germanis' powerful book features new full-color maps and photographs, as well as a supplementary section by Ojars Kalnins, Latvia's former Ambassador to the United States, which brings the history of Latvia up to date to our present era.
