The State Secretary and Iceland's new Ambassador discuss bilateral cooperation

On 14 December 2020, the State Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Andris Pelšs, had an online conversation with the Ambassador of Iceland, Auðunn Atlason.

During their conversation, Andris Pelšs underlined the historic link with Iceland – it was the very first country to recognise Latvia’s restored independence in 1991. He spoke as well of the Latvian diaspora in Iceland, which is promoting bilateral contacts. The Ambassador of Iceland praised cooperation with Latvia as a close Ally in NATO and partner with the European Union.

The State Secretary and the Ambassador also discussed business cooperation, highlighting potential for contacts in ICT and tourism and increasing interaction in the Baltic-Nordic (NB8) format. Cooperation in the Arctic region was also discussed, in view of Iceland’s current chairmanship of the Arctic Council.

The Ambassador of Iceland resides in Helsinki, Finland. An online accreditation with the President of Latvia, Egils Levits, has been scheduled for 16 December.
