Birth certificates and other public documents issued in the EU, the member states of the European Economic Area and Switzerland can be used in Latvia without any authentication.
Documents that have been issued in a country, which has joined the Hague Convention Abolishing the Requirement of Legalization for Foreign Public Documents should be certified with an Apostille by the competent institution of the issuing country. Documents that have been issued in a country, which has not joined the Hague Convention Abolishing the Requirement of Legalization for Foreign Public Documents should be certified with an Apostille by the competent institution of the issuing country and the Consular Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs or a diplomatic/ consular mission of Latvia.
Foreign documents, except those in English, Russian, German or French, must have a notarized translation in Latvian or in any of the aforementioned languages.
